Traffic blitz in Burnaby ends with 54 drivers getting warning letters

A traffic safety check in Burnaby ended with 54 drivers getting warning letters for failing to slow down and move over when passing a tow truck.

Mounties and representatives with the B-C-A-A spent Monday morning watching drivers on westbound Lougheed Highway at Phillips Avenue.

B-C drivers are required to slow down and move over for all vehicles stopped alongside the road that have flashing red, blue or yellow lights.

Officials say ignoring the law puts tow truck drivers and other roadside workers in danger.

The charge stems from a VPD investigation that was launched on August 22, 2021, when the Komagata Maru memorial, located in Coal Harbour, was defaced with white paint, hand prints, and graffiti. The memorial honours passengers who were aboard the Komagata Maru when the ship was denied entry to Vancouver after sailing here from India in 1914.
