UBC Geering Up Engineering Outreach Program Expands into Surrey’s Health and Technology District

    Surrey, B.C. (November 25, 2019) – The UBC Geering Up Engineering Outreach is expanding its science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) education programing into Surrey and the Fraser Valley with its new partnership with Surrey’s Health and Technology District.


    The Health and Technology District will be hosting a series of Geering Up Let’s Talk Tech workshops for secondary school students (grades 8-12). The free, half-day workshops on November 30th and February 29thhighlight the exciting possibilities of the tech industry through digital skills literacy. Students will dive into different emerging technologies by incorporating programming activities, links to real-life applications, and hands-on experiential learning.


    Let’s Talk Tech Workshops at Health and Technology District (#201-13737 – 96th Ave., Surrey)

    Saturday, November 30th, 2019 & February 29th, 2020


    9 a.m. to 12 p.m. – Grades 8 to 10
    1 p.m. to 4 p.m. – Grades 11 to 12
    The workshops are free and include all materials and snacks


    “The Health and Technology District is a vibrant ecosystem of innovation where we have a unique cluster of numerous technology organizations and start-up companies, research facilities, clinicians, innovators and entrepreneurs,” says Rowena Rizzotti, VP of Healthcare & Innovations at the Health and Technology District. “We are actively looking for ways to engage and inspire young people in Surrey and exposing them to the world of STEM and our partnership with UBC’s Geering Up Engineering Outreach Program is a great way to connect them to so many emerging opportunities.”


    The partnership will also engage District partners, including researchers, scientists, entrepreneurs, start-up companies and multinational companies to become guest lecturers, speakers and mentors to support the success of this program.


    UBC Geering Up Engineering Outreach is dedicated to promoting science, engineering and technology to the children and youth of British Columbia through fun, innovative and hands-on experiments and projects. Geering Up strives to reach all children and youth, regardless of gender, ethnicity, culture or socio-economic status, with special outreach for those groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences.
