Canada's only three-pitch water-based field hockey complex opens at Tamanawis Park

  • Canada's only three-pitch water-based field hockey complex opens at Tamanawis Park

City Council celebrated the completion of a third water-based synthetic turf field at Tamanawis Park, making it the only field hockey complex in Canada with three elite-level fields built for high-performance competition.

“We’ve seen Surrey grow into one of the country’s leading destinations for field hockey, hosting major tournaments at every level, including Field Hockey Canada’s 2026 U18 National Championships,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “By investing in facilities like this, we’re creating more opportunities for young people to get active, build confidence, and pursue excellence in sport -- right here in Surrey.

Water-based turf – required for high-level competition – features short, dense artificial grass that is sprayed with water at intervals to provide a smooth and fast-playing surface.

The $4.94-million investment in the new field was supported through the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Department capital budget, provincial gaming revenue and the Canada Community-Building Fund.

“Our government is committed to investing in outdoor parks and recreation facilities, which support the health and wellbeing of Canadians,” said Sukh Dhaliwal, Member of Parliament for Surrey Newton. “We are proud to celebrate the completion of the Tamanawis Park Field Hockey Pitch, a place where the community can get active, play and enjoy together.”

“Completion of this project is a major milestone for Surrey’s Sport Tourism Strategy,” said Cllr. Gordon Hepner, chair of the Parks, Recreation and Sport Tourism Committee. “These kinds of investments strengthen our ability to attract national and international competitions, drive economic activity and showcase Surrey as a destination for high-performance sport.”

Located in Newton, Tamanawis Park spans 19.5 acres and offers a baseball diamond, sport court, picnic shelters and walking paths that connect to the Serpentine Greenway. Additional improvements are planned, including a new $3.26-million fieldhouse with change rooms and washrooms. Together, these improvements represent a total investment of $8.2 million in the park that will enhance the experience for athletes and park visitors alike.

“Surrey is a world-class destination for sports, and this new field will bring athletes together for hundreds of hours of community connection at Tamanawis Park.” said Garry Begg, Parliamentary Secretary for Surrey Infrastructure and MLA for Surrey-Guildford. “Partnerships like this are a great example of how governments can work together to create positive change.”

More games means Vancouver unsure of hosting costs for 2026 FIFA World Cup
The City of Vancouver says it's unable to give a complete estimate of costs associated with hosting 2026 FIFA World Cup matches because it is hosting two more games than originally anticipated. The original cost, released by the provincial government at the end of January 2023, pegged the bill for hosting five World Cup matches as $230 million, with much of that money going towards event security.
