The Vancouver Canucks took the first step toward a dedicated practice facility Thursday, signing a memorandum of understanding with the City of Vancouver.
The proposed development would be built next to the city-owned Britannia Rink in the city's east end.
The Canucks, who play at the team-owned Rogers Arena, do not have a dedicated practice facility, a rarity in the NHL. The proposed development would provide the NHL club with a permanent training home.
The team says the proposal would also include new community amenities and expanded youth programming.
The Canucks and the city's joint announcement did not include an estimated cost or say how the project would be funded.
The project is subject to further negotiations, public consultation and approval by Vancouver city council.
