Saudi blogger spared flogging again this week: Amnesty International

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 20 Feb, 2015 10:47 AM

MONTREAL — Amnesty International says Saudi Arabia has postponed the flogging of blogger Raif Badawi today for a sixth consecutive week.

The human rights organization's Paris office says Badawi was spared a lashing today, but they're not sure what the reasons were.

Badawi is serving 10 years in prison and has also been sentenced to 1,000 lashes for blog posts criticizing Saudi Arabia's clerics.

The first 50 lashes were delivered on Jan. 9 and Amnesty says he's had none since then.

Badawi is not a Canadian citizen but his wife and children fled Saudi Arabia in 2012 and settled in Sherbrooke, Que., in 2013.

His detention and sentence have stirred up worldwide condemnation.
