Spike in COVID19 cases in BC

B-C is experiencing a spike in COVID-19 numbers, with cases, hospitalizations and deaths all up in recent weeks.

The monthly report from the B-C Centre for Disease Control shows that 447 people tested positive for the virus between August 27th and September 2nd -- more than triple the 133 cases recorded in the first full week of last month.

The centre says the number of deaths rose from eight in the first week of August to 15, then dipped to 12.

Over the past four weeks, five outbreaks were reported -- four in acute care facilities and one at a long-term care home.

British Columbia's seniors advocate is asking the province to designate one person as an essential visitor for every long-term care resident as the facilities move to stem the spread of COVID-19. Isobel Mackenzie says in a news release that the need to limit visitors has left a majority of long-term care residents without visits from loved ones.

3,223 COVID19 cases for Thursday

There are 31,817 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, and 238,524 people who tested positive have recovered. Of the active cases, 324 individuals are in hospital and 90 are in intensive care. The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.
